A brilliant male vermilion flycatcher pauses for only a moment before launching back into the air in pursuit of another insect. Like many flycatchers, they hunt from an exposed perch, returning to the same lookout again and again after each successful chase. I watched this bird repeat that pattern in the wetlands of southern Arizona, where its vivid red plumage seemed to glow against the muted greens and browns of the cattails.
