When I lived in the city, almost 40 years ago, my housing was in a tiny space, shared with others. And so Central Park became my patio. I would go into the park to meet friends for a game of softball, or to read a book, or have a picnic, or just walk in the shade on a hot day. There were areas I would not go into, but much of the park was open to all, and provided both a stage and seclusion. On a recent visit, we attended a free concert and wandered home through the well-lit paths that wound through the trees. The fireflies below and twinkling apartment lights above made the night seemed filled with light and movement.
