But it doesn't have to be apples. It can be anything. The idea is to divide your substrate (panel, canvas, paper, etc.) into smaller sections (mine are 3x3in.), and paint/draw something, anything, a bunch of times, but each one should be timed at 10 minutes.
Challenge yourself to try one tiny little thing that's new in each one. Make it looser, or thicker paint, or more colorful, or just anything you can think of that you've been wanting to try. I find I get ideas as I'm painting the one before. Write down your goal before you paint if that helps.
This whole thing might sound like work, but trust me, do it and you will learn something. I've been painting 30 years and I still make a point to do this on a regular basis.
