I painted this on site with bone dry grass crunching under my feet each time I stepped back to check my progress. Late summer bugs chattered and buzzed in the tangled brambles along a fence line off to my right. When I look at this painting, I remember the dry air, warmth radiating up from the ground, and the smell of hay bales curing.
