The first time I arrived in Spain it was via train from southern France. I had been hitchhiking through Europe, and my worried mother sent an express pass for train travel. I am forever grateful. The tracks ran along the northeastern coastline of the country and from the window I could see dazzling aquamarine waters, secret coves, picturesque villages, mountains reaching the coast. I continue to be enamored. The Costa Brava is a magnet for my weekend forays and an inspiration for this painting where I imagined a bouquet of sweet peas near the sea and sailboats in the distance. “Art is unquestionably one of the purest and highest elements in human happiness.
