"To paint is to love again. It’s only when we look with eyes of love that we see as the painter sees." Henry Miller
Figs have always been special to me. My sister-in-law lived in a traditional Andalusian house with an interior courtyard, adding a romance, tranquility, beauty to the home. Pepita carefully tended to her small vegetable garden in the inner patio. There was also a large lemon tree, lots of flowering potted plants and in the far corner with its gorgeous leaves was a fig tree. She taught me that the fig fruit are actually inverted flowers. The fig tree also has a wonderful spiritual history. In Buddhism the fig refers to the sacred Bodhi tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment. The fig leaf of course was what appeared in the Garden of Eden. In the Quran figs are described as fruits from paradise without seeds. And of course every bite is an explosion of deliciousness when they are ripe. This fruit is in my imagination and I enjoyed painting them rather loosely and joyfully. They are "small pleasures."
