2026 is the year of the horse. So I thought I would start it out with this beauty.

This drawing is done in black colored pencil and charcoal on pastelmat paper. I have been mesmerized by the herd of wild horses in the Tonto National Forest in Arizona known as the Salt River Wild Horses. This is the third piece of artwork I have done depicting one of these beautiful animals and I most likely will do many more. Here is a little info about them...

The Salt River wild horses are a herd of free-roaming horses living along the lower Salt River in Arizona’s Tonto National Forest. Celebrated for their resilience and deep-rooted history in the region, they’ve become a living symbol of the American West. Known for their unique genetic traits and ability to thrive in the desert, these horses have drawn widespread attention and inspired ongoing conservation efforts aimed at protecting their future while balancing their impact on the surrounding ecosystem.
