I painted this horse study over an old painting of mine that already had a warm yellow-orange background. I decided to leave the color, as I loved the idea of showing the horse in this beautiful end-of-day glow. It’s got a calm, grounded energy to it, and I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. Horses are honestly a joy to paint, I just love their powerful yet elegant forms. It’s been a refreshing detour from my usual (much-loved!) cat subjects, like taking a new trail after walking the same familiar path. There’s a whole new anatomical landscape to explore: long sweeping lines, strong joints, that beautiful balance between tension and fluidity in their movement.
