There used to be a paper factory around the corner from where I live. It's been closed for years and has stood empty ever since I moved here. Most of the factory buildings have now been torn down, but some structures will stay because they are historical landmarks of Dachau. For some reason, I'm drawn to this place. I walk by here often with my dog and have followed the progressing destruction from day one. There is something so desolate and lonely and serious about these empty buildings that fascinates me. In this piece I wanted to emphasize the height of the water tower by placing it in an uncommon position in the composition. I was also interested in using the cool shadows of the poplar trees, which are just outside of view on the left of this painting, to draw the eye into the picture. This is a scene from an early morning at the beginning of spring. There used to be a paper factory around the corner from where I live.
