I grew up near Formby pinewoods, where there used to be an abundance of red squirrels. Sadly there are very few red squirrels left in Formby these days due to the arrival of squirrel pox around 2007, and the last two times we've visited, we haven't seen a single one. The reference for this painting was taken in the Yorkshire Dales at a red squirrel hide near Hawes, where I did a photography workshop with Going Digital.
