At the end of the lane that I turned down, the road stopped in a widened spot, and an old launch point ran into the water. Salt water marshes spread out to the left and right, and straight ahead lay the sea, but a sheltered section in Accabonac Harbor. In fact, if one launched a kayak and paddled straight out, and then looked left, it is possible to see the Pollack-Krasner House and Museum. I started painting the beautiful salt marshes, eager to get down a few sketches in my time there. At one point I turned around and saw the road curving off into the trees. I loved the way the pavement ended, the road becoming sand instead. So many hidden drives and roads out here in East Hampton do the same thing. They lead one down a winding, narrow and rural lane before turning to sand. Many are so rutted and pitted that they become a little sketchy. And that's when the trees stop and one can view the wide seashore. It always feels like an adventure.
